There are a variety of reasons why people choose to pre-plan their funeral. Some people want to spare their loved ones from having to make tough emotional and financial decisions at the time of passing. Others have strong preferences for their funeral that they want to ensure are honored. Pre-planning also may allow people to reduce their total assets to qualify for Medicaid benefits or other public assistance. These are just a few of the reasons why people choose to pre-plan.
A living will is a written, legal document. It provides instructions for your medical care, or for the termination of medical support, in certain circumstances. Living wills indicate your wishes for the use or discontinuation of life-sustaining treatments.
A funeral trust is a legally binding financial arrangement that ensures funds are set aside for end-of-life expenses. It’s designed to help securely prepay and plan for funeral expenses, easing the financial burden on families during an emotional time.
Burial Benefits are not just for combat veterans. Most veterans who didn't receive a dishonorable discharge are eligible for a burial benefit. A spouse or minor child of a veteran is also eligible and, in some cases, an unmarried adult dependent child of a veteran.
Burial Benefits are not limited to military cemeteries. The VA provides a standard issue headstone or marker to any veteran who wishes to be buried in a private cemetery, free of charge. Eligibility requirements are different for this benefit, but combat service is still not required. Spouses and dependents are ineligible for benefits at a nonmilitary burial ground.
